Sugar Mountain North Carolina is nestled in one of the most beautiful and culturally rich areas in Western North Carolina. Due to several community theatre programs and the endeavors of two of the region’s educational institutions—Lees McRae College, a private, co-educational 4-year college, and Appalachian State University, a public liberal arts state university—there are many opportunities to enjoy the theatre, live concerts and exhibits. Both schools have esteemed departments in music, theatre and dance and both host amazing summer programs.

An Appalachian Summer Festival is Appalachian’s month-long festival of concert, theatre and dance programs that bring world renowned artists, lecturers and celebrities to the High Country each July. The Lees McRae Summer Programs also bring plenty of great shows to the area each summer. Guests that stay in the Banner Elk Rentals on Sugar Mountain like to venture out to some of the shows offered during the Lees McRae Summer Program and for ASU Appalachian Summer Festival events. Many guests like to enjoy a delicious meal at the Banner Elk Restaurants before venturing out to the show and others find that a nightcap after the program is just what they are looking for.
In addition to the numerous community theatres and the special programs offered during the rich cultural festivals at each school, Boone NC is home to the oldest Revolutionary War drama and the third oldest continually running outdoor drama in the country. Horn in the West is a legendary outdoor drama that visitors to the High Country and their families always take time to enjoy. The show season begins in mid-June and ends in mid-August and is a wonderful show to check out while you are in town. Check out the Horn in the West show which is within a short driving distance from the Mountain Rentals North Carolina located at Highlands at Sugar.
