Shag at Sugar

If you love to dance, you’ll love Shag at Sugar Mountain. Beech Mountain’s Autumn at Oz

Years ago, Beech Mountain North Carolina was home to an amusement park that honored the classic film The Wizard of Oz. Today, though the amusement park has since closed its doors, the citizens of the mile-high community of Beech Mountain North Carolina honor the Land of Oz with a festival that takes place the first weekend in October and transforms the mountain into a storybook land. Autumn at Oz is enjoyed by children of all ages and is a dearly loved tradition in the Beech Mountain community. The Woolly Worm Festival

This famed festival has been one of the most popular Sugar Mtn NC Events for 33 years. A sure sign that winter is just around the corner, this annual festival is fun for guests of all ages who can’t help but be delighted by the unique activities that take place during the Woolly Worm Festival. Each year, participants gather up woolly worms—a native species of caterpillar with a furry body that often features distinct bands of brown or black hair—and challenge fellow contestants and their worms to see whose will make it to the top of a short string first. The particular pattern on the winning worm is said to predict the severity of the coming winter. In addition to the worm races, the Woolly Worm Festival attracts over a hundred arts and crafts vendors who cater to the thousands of people who flock to the festival each year.
